According to some sources, the conical roof of Galata Tower was destroyed by a storm in 1875, but photographs taken by foreign travelers such as James Robertson, Ernest De Caranza and Francis Bedford in the 19th century have revealed that the conical roof, which existed in 1854, was removed by 1862. The photo taken by Francis Bedford on 21 May 1862 reveals that there were ongoing reparation (or modification) works in 1862, and the flag pole on top was also temporarily missing.
