To replicate handwriting, Griffo cut at least sixty-five tied letters (<a href="page.php?w=Typographic_ligature">ligatures</a>) in the Aldine Dante and Virgil of 1501. Italic typefaces of the following century used varying but reduced numbers of ligatures.</p>
