In his youth, Joseph Redding studied with the California pianist Hugo L. Mansfeldt and gave his first public concerts playing piano duos with Mansfeldt at the age of 11. He attended schools in the Sacramento City Unified School District before entering the California Military Academy (CMA) in Oakland, California, in 1871.
