<p>At that time, the raw chalk was delivered by ship from Jasmund to Hagenow's factory. Through a process known as <a href="page.php?w=Slurry">slurrying</a>, the raw chalk was separated from the undesirable rock components such as <a href="page.php?w=flint">flint</a> (see above) and finer-grained impurities (known as Grand). The excavation and preparation of the chalk were carried out almost exclusively with strenuous manual labor.</p>
