At that time, the raw chalk was delivered by ship from Jasmund to Hagenow's factory. Through a process known as slurrying, the raw chalk was separated from the undesirable rock components such as flint (see above) and finer-grained impurities (known as Grand). The excavation and preparation of the chalk were carried out almost exclusively with strenuous manual labor.
