A compromise was made whereby the Dutch agreed to make William a child of the state and pay for his education. Despite diplomatic efforts in 1660 and the personal connection through William of Orange, tensions between England and the Netherlands intensified that eventually led to war. Although the Dutch had won a series of victories they came to terms with the English due to the threat posed by France. With the Oranges held in check by a Perpetual Edict
