for Punch, The Illustrated London News, The Pictorial World, and The Graphic. To ensure that his accompanying illustrations would be published, he initially worked as a journalist, and his work included individual sketches, illustrations of articles, and a series of illustrations of a holiday which he and Blackburn took in Germany's Harz Mountains. This resulted in the 1873 book The Harz Mountains: A Tour in the Toy Country.
