Wu Hung's scholarly works on Chinese art center around a broad range of topics and themes. One critical question on which Wu constantly reflected is what an artwork in Chinese art is and how it could be studied. Different from previous scholarship that focused either on iconographical identification or larger social trends, his dissertation and the first book on the Wu Liang Shrine
