<p>Another prominent sign of labour is the <a href="page.php?w=rupture_of_membranes">rupture of membranes</a>, commonly known as "water breaking".  During pregnancy, a baby is surrounded and cushioned by a fluid-filled sac (the <a href="page.php?w=amniotic_sac">amniotic sac</a>). Usually, the sac ruptures at the beginning of or during labour.
