In these wetlands, the process of coalification began when dead plant matter was protected from <a href="page.php?w=oxidation">oxidation</a>, usually by mud or acidic water, and was converted into <a href="page.php?w=peat">peat</a>. The resulting <a href="page.php?w=peat_bog">peat bog</a>s, which trapped immense amounts of carbon, were eventually deeply buried</p><p>
