The bit is interchangeable as bits wear down. The auger uses a rotating helical screw similar to the Archimedean screw-shaped bit that is common today. The <a href="page.php?w=Gimlet_%28tool%29">gimlet</a> is also worth mentioning as it is a scaled down version of an auger.</p>
