<p>Middle English  changed to <a href="page.php?w=Early_Modern_English">Early Modern English</a> , which later changed to  and finally to the <a href="page.php?w=Modern_English">Modern English</a> diphthong  in <a href="page.php?w=General_American">General American</a> and <a href="page.php?w=Received_Pronunciation">Received Pronunciation</a>. Because the diphthong  developed from a Middle English long vowel, it is called "long"  in traditional English grammar. </p>
