<p>In Germany, <a href="page.php?w=Hans_von_Ohain">Hans von Ohain</a> patented a similar engine in 1935. His design, an axial-flow engine, as opposed to Whittle's centrifugal flow engine, was eventually adopted by most manufacturers by the 1950s.</p>
