Originally constructed by <a href="page.php?w=Chinese_Manichaeism">Chinese Manichaeans</a>, it was considered by later worshipers to be a <a href="page.php?w=Buddhist_temple">Buddhist temple</a>. This "Manichaean temple in Buddhist disguise" had historically been seen by modern experts on Manichaeism as "the only Manichaean building which has survived intact".
