<p><b>Exaptation</b> or <b>co-option</b> is a shift in the <a href="page.php?w=Function_%28biology%29">function</a> of a trait during <a href="page.php?w=evolution">evolution</a>. For example, a trait can evolve because it served one particular function, but subsequently it may come to serve another. Exaptations are common in both anatomy and behaviour.</p>
