<p>In geology, a <b>group</b> is a <a href="page.php?w=lithostratigraphy">lithostratigraphic</a> <a href="page.php?w=Stratigraphic_unit">unit</a> consisting of a series of related <a href="page.php?w=Geological_formation">formations</a> that have been classified together to form a group.  Formations are the fundamental unit of stratigraphy.  Groups may sometimes be combined into <a href="page.php?w=Supergroup_%28geology%29">supergroups</a>.</p>
