It was also a place for socializing and engaging in intellectual pursuits. The name comes from the <a href="page.php?w=Ancient_Greek">Ancient Greek</a> term <a href="page.php?w=wikt%3A%3F%3Fu%3F%3F%3F">gymnós</a>, meaning "naked" or "nude". Only adult male citizens were allowed to use the gymnasia.</p>
