It was one of several towns whose people spoke the <a href="page.php?w=Mikasuki_language">Hitchiti language</a>. It was first known as part of the <a href="page.php?w=Apalachicola_Province">Apalachicola Province</a>, an association of tribal towns along the <a href="page.php?w=Chattahoochee_River">Chattahoochee River</a>.
