The term derives from the <a href="page.php?w=French_language">French</a> <i>madame</i>, from "<i>ma dame</i>" meaning "my lady". In French, the abbreviation is "<i>M{{sup</i>}}" or "<i>Mme</i>" and the plural is <i>mesdames</i> (abbreviated "<i>M{{sup</i>}}"</p><p>
