It is mostly used for describing intermolecular interactions, but at times also for modeling intramolecular interaction, i.e. bonds.</p>

<p>The Mie potential is named after the German physicist <a href="page.php?w=Gustav_Mie">Gustav Mie</a>; yet the history of intermolecular potentials is more complicated.
