It is famous for its ability to change from an <a href="page.php?w=amoeba">amoeba</a>, which lacks a cytoplasmic microtubule <a href="page.php?w=cytoskeleton">cytoskeleton</a>, to a <a href="page.php?w=flagellate">flagellate</a>, which has an elaborate microtubule cytoskeleton, including flagella. This "transformation" includes de novo synthesis of basal bodies (or centrioles).</p>
