Although there are many fossil species, the only species surviving today is the <a href="page.php?w=aardvark">aardvark</a> (Orycteropus afer). Orycteropodidae is recognized as the only family within the order <b>Tubulidentata</b> , referring to the tubule-style teeth, so the two are <a href="page.php?w=Monotypic_taxon">effectively synonyms</a>.</p>
