<p>The <b>Rutherford model</b> is a name for the concept that  an atom contains a compact nucleus. The concept arose after <a href="page.php?w=Ernest_Rutherford">Ernest Rutherford</a> directed the <a href="page.php?w=Geiger-Marsden_experiment">Geiger-Marsden experiment</a> in 1909, which showed much more alpha particle recoil than <a href="page.php?w=J._J._Thomson">J.
