<p>A <b>database shard</b>, or simply a <b>shard</b>, is a <a href="page.php?w=Partition_%28database%29">horizontal partition</a> of data within a <a href="page.php?w=DBMS">database</a> or <a href="page.php?w=search_engine">search engine</a>. Each shard may be held on a separate <a href="page.php?w=database_server">database server</a> instance in order to spread across multiple servers.</p>
