<p><b>Shawmut</b>, according to 19th-century scholarship, is a term derived from the <a href="page.php?w=Algonquian_languages">Algonquian</a> word Mashauwomuk referring to the region of present-day <a href="page.php?w=Boston%2C_Massachusetts">Boston, Massachusetts</a>.University Press, 1886.  It appears in a number of present-day placenames.</p>
