<p><b>Thin layers</b> are concentrated aggregations of <a href="page.php?w=phytoplankton">phytoplankton</a> and <a href="page.php?w=zooplankton">zooplankton</a> in coastal and offshore waters that are vertically compressed to thicknesses ranging from several centimeters up to a few meters and are horizontally extensive, sometimes for kilometers.</p>
