The term originated on the <a href="page.php?w=Yucat%C3%A1n_Peninsula">Yucatán Peninsula</a> of Mexico, where the ancient <a href="page.php?w=Maya_civilization_">Maya</a> commonly used cenotes for water supplies, and occasionally for <a href="page.php?w=sacrifice_in_Maya_culture"> sacrificial offerings</a>.</p><p>
