Before replication, one chromosome is composed of one <a href="page.php?w=DNA">DNA</a> molecule. In replication, the DNA molecule is copied, and the two molecules are known as chromatids. During the later stages of cell division these chromatids separate longitudinally to become individual chromosomes.</p>
