<p>A <b>dialect continuum</b> or <b>dialect chain</b> is a series of <a href="page.php?w=Variety_%28linguistics%29">language varieties</a> spoken across some geographical area such that neighboring varieties are <a href="page.php?w=Mutual_intelligibility">mutually intelligible</a>, but the differences accumulate over distance so that widely separated varieties may not be.
