Homocysteine (; symbol Hcy) is a non-proteinogenic ?-amino acid. It is a homologue of the amino acid cysteine, differing by an additional methylene bridge . It is biosynthesized from methionine by the removal of its terminal C^? methyl group.

Although the production of homocysteine
