<p>A <b>mathematical markup language</b> is a computer notation for representing <a href="page.php?w=mathematical_formulae">mathematical formulae</a>, based on <a href="page.php?w=mathematical_notation">mathematical notation</a>.  Specialized markup languages are necessary because computers normally deal with linear text and more limited character sets (although increasing support for <a href="page.php?w=Unicode">Unicode</a> is obsoleting very simple uses).
