The term originally described any type of entertainer such as a musician, <a href="page.php?w=juggler">juggler</a>, <a href="page.php?w=acrobatics">acrobat</a>, singer or <a href="page.php?w=jester">fool</a>; later, from the sixteenth century, it came to mean a specialist entertainer who sang songs and played musical instruments.</p>
