<p><b>Morphological derivation</b>, in <a href="page.php?w=linguistics">linguistics</a>, is the process of forming a new word from an existing word, often by adding a <a href="page.php?w=prefix">prefix</a> or <a href="page.php?w=suffix">suffix</a>, such as ''un-'' or ''-ness''. For example, unhappy and  happiness derive from the <a href="page.php?w=root_word">root word</a> happy.</p>
