Pineapples are indigenous to South America but have been widely cultivated in the Philippines since the 17th century, and used for weaving lustrous lace-like luxury textiles known as <a href="page.php?w=nipis">nipis</a> fabric. The name is derived from Spanish piña, meaning "pineapple".</p>
