<p>In physics, the <b>Rayleigh dissipation function</b>, named after <a href="page.php?w=Lord_Rayleigh">Lord Rayleigh</a>, is a function used to handle the effects of velocity-proportional frictional forces in <a href="page.php?w=Lagrangian_mechanics">Lagrangian mechanics</a>. It was first introduced by him in 1873.
