The word may sometimes be used as a <a href="page.php?w=metonym">metonym</a>, to refer to the entire food item served on a skewer, as in "chicken skewers". Skewers are used while <a href="page.php?w=grilling">grilling</a> or <a href="page.php?w=roasting">roasting</a> meats and fish, and in other culinary applications.</p>
