<p>In <a href="page.php?w=linguistics">linguistics</a>, <b>synaeresis</b> (; also spelled <b>syneresis</b>) is a phonological process of sound change in which two adjacent vowels within a word are combined into a single syllable.</p>

<p>The opposite process, in which two adjacent vowels are pronounced separately, is known as "<a href="page.php?w=Hiatus_%28linguistics%29">diaeresis</a>".</p>
